Spring planting with children

Springtime is a beautiful time of year, especially the transition from a snowy white winter to flowers starting to bloom. Back in the 70’s, in my home day care, every spring the children and I planted morning glories from seed. The children could take home the plants that they planted for yards with their family. Together, we also planted one outside the main door of the home day care.

Through this fun planting activity, the children learned many concepts. They were amazed to see how tiny little seeds could grow as tall as the outdoor light and transform into beautiful purple and pink flowers. Together, the kids and I measured the flowers’ growth each week, which helped them learn math.

We also discussed the colors of the flowers – teaching about colors. Additionally, we introduced the concept of open and close. In the morning, all the flowers were open and blooming, by midday, they would close! Teaching concepts also included the concept of small and big flowers.

So much fun and teaching surrounded this planting activity!
