Summer Water Play!

Summer Edgar

Every year we are excited to start water play! Children love playing in the water, especially while playing outside.

Water play offers children the opportunity to learn so many different skills while enjoying this fun activity.  Children are drawn to playing with water and it is important to provide children with meaningful learning opportunities.

How can you encourage your child’s learning through water play?

Provide a variety of toys and materials and encourage children to play with them.  Start simple with recycled materials (make sure they are safe and unbreakable first) such as empty containers, jugs, or cups.  Other materials can include measuring cups, funnels, ladles, water droppers, colanders, and more.

While children are mixing, splashing, and pouring, ask scientific questions- “What do you think will happen if you pour that jug of water into that cup?” or make observations “That water splashed a lot when you dropped the cup into it.”

By asking questions and commenting on a child’s play, adults are facilitating learning.

Not only is water play fun and refreshing, it is also a great opportunity for learning!

When children splash, pour, scoop, and explore water outdoors, they are doing much more than having fun—they are building important skills that support their development across all learning areas.

Science and Discovery

Water play encourages children to become little scientists. They observe what floats and sinks, experiment with cause and effect, and learn how water moves through containers, funnels, and tubes. These hands-on experiences help develop curiosity, problem-solving skills, and early scientific thinking.

Math Concepts

As children fill buckets, compare amounts of water, and measure using different containers, they are exploring early math concepts such as volume, counting, estimation, and comparison. They learn words like full, empty, more, less, and equal through meaningful play.

Fine and Gross Motor Development

Pouring, squeezing, scooping, and stirring strengthen the small muscles in children’s hands and fingers. Running through sprinklers, carrying water, and navigating outdoor play spaces help develop balance, coordination, and overall physical strength.

Social and Emotional Growth

Water play often involves sharing materials, taking turns, and working together. Children practice communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution while building friendships and confidence. The calming nature of water can also help children regulate emotions and reduce stress.

Language Development

As children describe their discoveries and engage in conversations with teachers and peers, they expand their vocabulary and communication skills. Water play introduces new words and concepts in a natural, engaging way.

Learning Through Play

Most importantly, outdoor water play allows children to learn through exploration and creativity. Whether they are creating a pretend car wash, mixing “soups” in a water table, or experimenting with floating objects, children are developing critical thinking skills while enjoying the joys of summer.

The next time you see your child splashing and playing with water, remember—they are learning, growing, and making meaningful discoveries every step of the way!
