One of NurturEd Early Learning Center’s most veteran teachers, Samantha “Sam” Poisson, brings plenty of real-world experience to the job: she’s a mom of two children of her own.
Ms. Sam has been with us for most of the past decade, and is the picture of calm under pressure. The lead toddler teacher at our Chapel Four Corners location in Cumberland, she said she loves living in Cumberland. She also lived in Lincoln for a time.
Asked if it’s sometimes a bit much to be around children for so much of her life, she said it can be, but having the patience and skills needed for the work makes it more than manageable.
“I love being creative with them,” she said, understanding that children learn best through hands-on projects that sometimes get a little messy.
There are many misconceptions about this occupation, including assuming that workers simply babysit all day, or that children just play all day, said Ms. Sam. There is so much more to it as they help children through structured routines.
Those routines, she said, are so important in helping children grow into who they will become, as is their daily communication with parents and teachers.
Ms. Sam graduated from Rhode Island College with an associate’s degree in social work last May, and wants to continue working in educational settings.
She LOVES playing with the children, she says, and constantly finds it funny how they’re always telling her how to do her job.
When she’s not at NurturEd, she’s spending time with her children, including attending their sports and activities.
